Science Journalism Internship

Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology

The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) held its 2021 conference virtually (January 3 – February 28, 2021). I interned as a science journalist for the Public Affairs Committee to highlight presenters and communicate their research to the general public. The first piece I wrote was on Dr. Meredith Kernbach’s research on the harmful effects of light pollution on ecosystem health (the full article can be found on the February 17, 2021, ICB blog entry).

The second article featured work by Dr. Elizabeth Derryberry in which she and her team studied the impact of the COVID19 shutdowns on the singing behavior of white-crowned sparrows in the Bay Area. Check out the full article here.

Museum of Vertebrate Zoology

Archives Blog – Contributing Writer

The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology was founded in 1908 by Annie Montague Alexander who, in addition to being a philanthropist, was a naturalist and photographer at a time when opportunities outside of the household were limited for women. Prior to establishing her legacy as the MVZ founder, Annie traveled to Africa with her father Samuel Alexander. Read about her adventure and the lasting effect that this trip had on the history of the MVZ in my piece, “The Woman Beyond the Portrait: Annie and Samuel Alexander’s 1904 Expedition fo East Africa” in the MVZ Archives Blog.
